Choreography and performance by Lydia Zimmer

LYDIA ZIMMER grew up training at Halifax Dance. She received her BFA from The Boston Conservatory in 2011 and also trained with Canada’s National Ballet School, Springboard Danse Montreal, Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Traditions and The Movement Invention Project. Since returning to Halifax Lydia has presented Bonne Nuit in April 2016, Embankment, a trio performed by Votive Dance in 2017 and Sonderlings, performed by Nostos Collectives Dance in June 2018. Additionally Lydia has completed residencies through the Nes Artist Residency in Fall 2016 in Skagastrond, Iceland, and, in July 2017 at the Derida Dance Centre in Sola, Bulgaria. Lydia currently dances for Mocean Dance, creates and performs for Nostos Dance Collectives and Votive Dance.

In Sonderling Lydia has created a geometric and dark work inspired by an Irish rhyme from the 1700s. When does the methodical and organized become a form of derangement? What is the consequential accumulation of actions over a lifetime? Sonderling demonstrates an eccentric, fateful, and repetitive nature of movement as a response to linking these concepts together, driven by the mysterious and haunting The Man of Double Deed. The consequences of one’s actions may not be as anticipated. Sonderling is a cautionary tale; a beacon at sea.

“…the work is at once quiet and trembling and psychologically thrilling…With swift geometric imagery and structural surprise the work takes on an alchemist like magic.” Halifax Dance Seen. Kara Friesen
