Based in K’jipuktuk/Halifax, Choreographer, Kathleen Doherty is an improviser, dancer and teacher and the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Votive Dance. After completing her degree at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Kathleen moved to Calgary to attend Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ Professional Training Program. She returned to Halifax in 2012 and founded Votive Dance with Stephanie Mitro. In addition to her work with Votive Dance, she also works as Administrative Director with Kinetic Studio.
Kathleen has enjoyed creative and performance opportunities with Votive Dance, Mocean Dance, Kinetic Studio, Connection Dance Works, Alberta Dance Festival, Verge, Caravan Theatre, Liliona Quarmyne, Mayworks Festival. She is lead Jazz instructor, and head of the Stage Teaching department with The Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts and co-director/instructor of the Jazz Dance Initiative. In June 2017, after completing movement research residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, Kathleen created a full length work inspired by her time and experiences there. The work was presented in Halifax in March 2018 by Votive Dance and the Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. Kathleen is proud to be a working artist mom to her 2 year old son, Cillian.
