FODAR marks its Fifth Season with two fundraisers currently running until mid June – one that celebrates the visual arts and one that showcases the the art of fine cuisine .

Art for Dance’s Sake

The FODAR Online Art Auction features 12 pieces of visual art that offer bidders  an eclectic choice. All participating artists are based in Nova Scotia. The auction includes works by: Rose Adams, Bonnie Baker, Wayne  Boucher, Donna Boyko, Terry Havlis Drahos, Sharon Irving-Kennedy, Debra Kuzyk/Ray Mackie, Janet Larkman, Ted Lind, Dawn MacNutt, Richard Rundnicki and Charlotte Wilson-Hammond. The auction’s online home is at 32auctions.com/fodar.

“It brought tears to my eyes to see the incredible support for FODAR,” said Artistic Director Randy Glynn. ‘The works are exceptional, beautiful, powerful and so diverse.  We have oil, acrylic, mixed media, porcelain, cyanotype, charcoal conté and ink on mylar, and twined willow,” he continued.’’

Close Connections

Glynn went on to remark on the connections he feels exist between contemporary dance and visual art. “I think that all Art nurtures creativity and inspiration between the different disciplines. Contemporary dance has  evolved to allow artists incredible freedom of expression through movement and takes on so many forms. I think visual art is similar in the way its creators continue to push boundaries, developing new media and original ways of looking at their world.”

The FODAR Art Auction at 32auctions.com runs until June 17. FODAR will ship artwork free-of-charge to all successful bidders in Canada.

Dining for Dance

It could be said that cooking was the original artform and is probably still the most universal.  Just a few days after the FODAR Auction comes to an end, the Festival showcases the creative inspiration that inspires the art of fine cuisine. On Saturday, June 22, FODAR presents INDULGE in Annapolis Royal. INDULGE offers a five course menu with wine pairings created by acclaimed Toronto Chef Doug Penfold. Hosted by the historic Garrison House Inn, the event has limited seating.

A Remarkable Career

The culinary creator behind two critically acclaimed Toronto restaurants — Cava and Chabrol, Doug Penfold began his restaurant career at a very young age washing dishes in Vancouver eateries. In 1993, he packed everything he owned in a backpack, took the train to Toronto, and began knocking on restaurant delivery doors. That was the start of his climb from obscurity to a reputation as one of the City’s finest and most creative chefs.

In 2001 Doug joined the kitchen at Avalon, at that time the city’s top restaurant. That led to a partnership with chef Chris McDonald and the opening of Cava, where Doug helped shape the way Toronto now views Tapas and new wave Spanish cuisine. Over the years Doug also took the culinary helm at Chabrol and Atlas restaurants. Rave reviews followed each new endeavour. After 30 years, Chef Penfold has no intention of slowing down. He travels the world exploring  flavours, tastes and techniques which inspire his singular and eclectic take on traditional dishes.
