One of the world’s most richly expressive art forms, flamenco evolved as a way of stressing the rhythms of song and music. Vivid costumes, passionate movement and spine tingling music have made flamenco one of the most popular forms of dance in the world. From its early beginnings, flamenco spoke to the human condition and like all living art forms, it is influenced by its times; moving and evolving.  In 2010, Flamenco was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

About Maria

Born and raised in Madrid, Spain, Maria Osende started dancing at age seven and grew up strongly influenced by ballet and flamenco.  At seventeen she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship which allowed her to deepen her ballet studies at the renowned School of American Ballet in New York City.

Early in her professional career Maria danced professionally with the Compañia Nacional de Danza in Spain and the Berlin Ballet in Germany, where she was soon promoted to a soloist. She worked with several choreographers, performing a wide range of classical and contemporary repertoire.

Retuning to Madrid, Maria focused exclusively on flamenco at the renowned Centro de Arte Flamenco Amor de Dios. Shortly after, she began choreographing and performing her own work.

Since moving to Canada, Maria has established Halifax as an international flamenco hotspot. Now recognized as one of Canada’s leading flamenco artists, she has created numerous flamenco shows for her company and toured across Canada, getting rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Moving comfortably between tradition and innovation, Maria also engages in projects involving other dance forms, architecture, technology and various music genres.
