Choreographer, Sacred Garden

David Earle has created a large repertoire of passionate dance works for which he has received numerous honours and awards worldwide. These include the Order of Canada, a Gemini, the Dora Mavor Moore Award, an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen’s University, Kingston, and France’s Grand Prix International de vidéo-danse de Sète.

In 1968, he co-founded Toronto Dance Theatre with Patricia Beatty and Peter Randazzo, and was appointed sole Artistic Director in 1987. Upon leaving TDT in 1996, he launched Dancetheatre David Earle – for the preservation of his repertoire, to support continued creation, and to serve as a forum for younger artists whose concern is the expression of humanity in dance.

He has had commissions of work and collaborated with Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, The Guelph Chamber Choir, Soundstreams Canada, Art of Time Ensemble, NUMUS and The Penderecki String Quartet among others. He continues to work with musicians and choirs, to teach, create, and inspire young dance artists to explore.

“A legendary choreographic pioneer, and a towering figure on the contemporary scene.” – The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
